SuperBowl XLII

I was touched by the following message I received from ApologetiX about the recent Super Bowl, and figured I'd put it up. I'm off to Scotland now, so see you next on the 25th.

Crazy Super Bowl, wasn't it? I'm not a betting man, but did you know that the underdog has won about one third of all Super Bowls?

The world's greatest oddsmakers design point spreads -- not just picking winners but by how many points they'll win -- yet a third of the time they can't even pick the winner at all? What does that say about man's ability to predict the future? As Proverbs 16:33 says, "The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the LORD."

Giants receiver Plaxico Burress said this shortly after scoring the game-winning touchdown Sunday: " I just said, 'God, if you could just get me out of here tonight, based on what I've been through all year with my knee and ankle and the back and everything.' I'm just so grateful for the opportunity and I just told myself (if) I can come out here tonight and compete, I would give God all the glory."

It annoys me when people complain about athletes who give the glory to God. They act like God doesn't care about sports. Sure, there are many things in life more important than sports, but God cares about every aspect of our lives. Romans 8:28 says that "God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose."

That doesn't mean Christian athletes always win or never get hurt, but it does mean that God is in control of all things, including sports. I take comfort when the underdog wins, because it's a little reminder of Proverbs 19:21, "Many are the plans in a man's heart, but it is the LORD's purpose that prevails."
